Cannabinoids 101

Cannabinoids 101 - CBD education article by CJ's Medicine Cabinet

Cannabinoids are a group of naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. There are over 100 known cannabinoids, each with unique properties and potential benefits. The two most well-known cannabinoids are CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol).

How Cannabinoids Work

Cannabinoids interact with the body's endocannabinoid system (ECS), a complex network of receptors found throughout the body. The ECS plays a role in regulating many important functions, including pain, mood, sleep, appetite, and immune response.

The two main types of cannabinoid receptors are CB1 (primarily found in the brain and central nervous system) and CB2 (primarily found in the immune system and peripheral organs).

Common Cannabinoids

CBD (Cannabidiol)

The most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid in hemp. Known for potential anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, and pain-relieving properties. Does not produce a "high."

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

The primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. Responsible for the "high" associated with marijuana use. Also has potential therapeutic benefits including pain relief and appetite stimulation.

CBN (Cannabinol)

Formed when THC is exposed to oxygen and light over time. Known for its sedative properties and often used in sleep products.

CBG (Cannabigerol)

Known as the "mother cannabinoid" because it is the precursor from which other cannabinoids are synthesized. Shows promise for anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

CBC (Cannabichromene)

A non-psychoactive cannabinoid that may work with other cannabinoids to produce the entourage effect. Shows potential anti-inflammatory and antidepressant properties.

The Entourage Effect

When multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids work together, they may produce a greater combined effect than any single compound alone. This is known as the entourage effect and is one reason why full spectrum CBD products are popular among consumers.
