What Is CBG? The Mother of All Cannabinoids

Cannabigerol (CBG) is gaining serious attention in the wellness world, and for good reason. Often called the "mother of all cannabinoids," CBG is the chemical precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized. Without CBG, there would be no CBD, THC, or CBC.
CBG: The Precursor Cannabinoid
In the early stages of hemp plant growth, the plant produces cannabigerolic acid (CBGA). As the plant matures, enzymes convert CBGA into three major cannabinoid acids:
- THCA (which becomes THC)
- CBDA (which becomes CBD)
- CBCA (which becomes CBC)
By harvest time, most CBGA has been converted, leaving only trace amounts of CBG in mature plants (typically less than 1%). This scarcity is why CBG products are often more expensive than CBD products. Farmers must either harvest plants early (before conversion) or grow CBG-dominant cultivars to obtain meaningful quantities.
How CBG Works in the Body
CBG interacts with the endocannabinoid system differently than CBD:
Direct Receptor Binding
Unlike CBD, which has low binding affinity for cannabinoid receptors, CBG binds directly to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. It acts as a partial agonist at both receptor types, meaning it activates them but not to their full extent.
Alpha-2 Adrenergic Receptor Agonism
CBG activates alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which are involved in blood pressure regulation, pain modulation, and sympathetic nervous system activity. This mechanism may contribute to CBG's potential for pain relief and relaxation.
GABA Reuptake Inhibition
CBG may inhibit the reuptake of GABA, the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. Higher GABA levels promote calmness and reduce anxiety. Some researchers have noted that CBG's GABA effects may exceed those of both CBD and THC.
5-HT1A Serotonin Receptor
CBG acts as a competitive antagonist at 5-HT1A receptors, which is the opposite of CBD (which activates this receptor). This gives CBG a different profile for mood-related effects.
PPARgamma Activation
Like CBD, CBG activates PPARgamma receptors involved in metabolism and inflammation. This may contribute to anti-inflammatory effects.
Potential Benefits of CBG (What Research Shows)
Anti-Inflammatory Properties
A 2013 study published in Biochemical Pharmacology found that CBG reduced inflammation markers in a mouse model of inflammatory bowel disease. The researchers concluded that CBG may be considered for clinical experimentation in IBD patients.
Neuroprotective Effects
Research from Neurotherapeutics (2015) found that CBG showed neuroprotective properties in a mouse model of Huntington's disease, improving motor deficits and preserving neurons.
Antibacterial Activity
A 2020 study in the American Chemical Society's Infectious Diseases journal found that CBG showed potent antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Appetite Stimulation
Unlike CBD (which is generally appetite-neutral), CBG has been shown to stimulate appetite in animal studies. A 2016 study in Psychopharmacology found that CBG significantly increased food intake in rats without producing intoxicating effects.
Bladder Dysfunction
Research published in the Indian Journal of Urology found that CBG (among several cannabinoids tested) was most effective at reducing bladder contractions, suggesting potential for overactive bladder conditions.
Glaucoma
CBG may reduce intraocular pressure due to the high density of cannabinoid receptors in eye structures. Early research from the 1990s identified this potential, though more research is needed.
CBG vs. CBD: Key Differences
- Receptor binding: CBG binds directly to CB1 and CB2; CBD does not
- Appetite: CBG may stimulate appetite; CBD is generally neutral
- Serotonin: CBG blocks 5-HT1A; CBD activates it
- GABA: CBG may have stronger GABA effects than CBD
- Abundance: CBG is rare in mature plants (under 1%); CBD can reach 20%+
- Price: CBG products typically cost 2 to 3 times more than equivalent CBD products
- Entourage effect: CBG and CBD taken together may enhance each other's benefits
