What Is CBN? The Sleep Cannabinoid Explained

What Is CBN? The Sleep Cannabinoid Explained - CBD education article by CJ's Medicine Cabinet

If you have tried a CBD sleep formula, you have probably seen CBN (cannabinol) on the label. CBN has earned a reputation as the "sleepy cannabinoid," and it is increasingly popular in nighttime wellness products. But what is CBN, how does it form, and does it actually help with sleep?

How CBN Is Formed

CBN is unique among cannabinoids because it is not produced directly by the hemp plant's enzymes. Instead, CBN is a degradation product of THC. When THC is exposed to heat, light, and oxygen over time, it slowly converts into CBN through a process called oxidation.

This is why aged cannabis tends to be more sedating than fresh cannabis. The THC has partially converted to CBN. It is also why CBN is sometimes called the "aged cannabinoid."

For commercial CBN products, manufacturers use controlled processes to convert THC into CBN, then purify the CBN for use in formulations. The final CBN products contain negligible THC.

How CBN Works

Weak CB1 Agonist

CBN binds to CB1 receptors, but with roughly one-tenth the strength of THC. This weak binding produces mild sedation without significant psychoactive effects. At normal supplement doses, CBN is not intoxicating.

CB2 Receptor Activity

CBN also interacts with CB2 receptors, contributing to anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating effects.

TRPV2 Receptor Activation

CBN activates TRPV2 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 2), a receptor involved in pain sensing, inflammation, and immune function. This receptor is different from the TRPV1 receptor that CBD activates.

Sedative Mechanism

The exact mechanism behind CBN's sedative effects is still being studied. Some researchers believe the sedation comes from CBN's synergy with terpenes (particularly myrcene and linalool) rather than from CBN alone. A 2021 review noted that CBN's sedative reputation may be more entourage-driven than cannabinoid-driven.

CBN and Sleep: What the Research Shows

The Sedation Question

The claim that CBN is sedating comes primarily from anecdotal reports and a single 1975 study that found THC combined with CBN increased drowsiness compared to THC alone. However, it is important to note that CBN alone was not tested in that study.

A 2021 study found that CBN on its own did not demonstrate significant sedative effects in mice. However, when combined with CBD and specific terpenes, the sedative effects were enhanced.

The Practical Reality

Despite the limited clinical evidence for CBN as a solo sedative, thousands of users report better sleep with CBN-containing products. This may be because:

  • CBN products typically contain other sleep-promoting ingredients (CBD, melatonin, terpenes)
  • The combination of CBN + CBD may be more effective than either alone
  • CBN's anti-anxiety and muscle-relaxing properties may indirectly improve sleep
  • The entourage effect amplifies sedation when CBN is part of a full spectrum formula

Other Potential Benefits

Pain relief: A 2019 study in Archives of Oral Biology found that CBN reduced myofascial pain in rats, suggesting potential for muscle and jaw pain.

Anti-inflammatory: CBN has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in multiple studies, particularly relevant for conditions that disrupt sleep.

Antibacterial: Like CBG, CBN has shown activity against antibiotic-resistant bacteria including MRSA.

Appetite stimulation: CBN may stimulate appetite without the psychoactive effects of THC.

CBN + CBD: Better Together

The combination of CBN and CBD is the foundation of most CBD sleep products, including our Sleep Gummies and Sleep Drops. Here is why they work well together:

  • CBD reduces anxiety and quiets racing thoughts
  • CBN promotes physical relaxation and mild sedation
  • Together they activate complementary pathways in the ECS
  • With terpenes like myrcene and linalool, the sedative effect is amplified

Dosing CBN for Sleep

CBN is typically dosed at 2.5 to 10mg per serving in sleep products, alongside 15 to 50mg of CBD. Some guidelines:

  • Mild sleep issues: 2.5 to 5mg CBN + 15 to 25mg CBD
  • Moderate sleep issues: 5 to 10mg CBN + 25 to 50mg CBD
  • Take 30 to 60 minutes before bed
  • Be consistent: Like CBD, CBN works best with regular use

Our CBN Products

CJ's Medicine Cabinet Sleep Drops and Full Spectrum Sleep Gummies both contain CBN alongside CBD for a synergistic sleep formula.
